Things I Forgot to Buy For My Baby | First-Time Mom Mistakes

Prepping for a baby is like trying to assemble a puzzle in the dark. I am a prepper! I made all the checklists, I read all the blogs, I bought all the bamboo onesies, the bouncer, the toy boxes! I had kits, creams, ointments! Everything that I thought we needed, we had. Yet, still… in the wee hours of the night, my husband or I would find ourselves in a Target or Walmart, some sort of store scrambling to get things that our babies needed.

New parents rule #1

Every baby is different and so are their needs. You can read all the blogs and checklists. But your specific baby has very specific needs. Here are some of the items that caught me and my family off guard.

Nasal Spray

Babies get sick, and when ours got sick for the first time our pediatrician recommended a nasal spray. This is supposed to help our baby with congestion. They make many forms, you can get the spray or the mist. With the spray bottle the application is shooting the solution up one nostril, while the excess snot drips out the other.

Humidifier

A humidifier adds moisture to the air and helps your baby breath easily. This was another recommendation from our pediatrician when we took her in for a sick visit. The set-up for this product was super easy and intuitive, we just fill it up with water each night and run it into the air.

Extra Linens

I grossly underestimated the number of linens I needed for my baby. I received a handful of bibbs and clothes from my registry but it wasn’t enough. My husband or I found ourselves constantly visiting the store to pick up some extra linens for our daughter. This includes:

Interactive Chair

My family opted to buy an interactive chair to support our daughter on her sitting-up journey! When we would hold her in our laps while at our desks, she would intuitively want to press down on our light-up mechanical keyboards and would be amused watching it light up and make noise. We knew that there would be something out of the marketplace to facilitate this behavior at an age-appropriate level, so we bought her 2 interactive chairs that have different activities associated with them.

Play Mat

Last but not least, my family completely forgot about play mats! We were gifted the Love Every play mat from our registry, but we didn’t think about a surface to place it on. Our 2 bedroom apartment had hardwood floors so placing the playmat directly on the floor would not have been comfortable for our daughter. At first, I had some extra blankets lying around that I used as a surface underneath the mat but that quickly became an eyesore. I found a mat on Amazon that was so stinking cute and haven’t looked back since.
